Andorra is a landlocked country with no train station and no airport. The only way into the country is through the Spanish or French borders by Land. One of the most frequent travel itineraries is from Barcelona.
The usual transport methods for entering the country without a privately-owned vehicle are by bus or Taxi.
If traveling by bus, please take the following into account:
There are three ways of purchasing tickets: via the internet, by calling and making a reservation or you can buy it in person. Please be aware that during high-tourism season tickets often run out quickly and it may be best to make a reservation. The tickets tend to cost between 30 to 40 euros but there are discounts depending on age groups.
If you are traveling on a long-haul flight or perhaps on a British airways flight you will land in terminal 1 of Barcelona Airport. Terminal 1 is the relatively newly built terminal. Terminal 2 is Barcelona´s relatively new terminal. It’s a great place to do some shopping or have a meal before continuing your journey. It has a Bus Station on the ground floor of the terminal. To find the bus station you can follow the signs within the airport or ask at one of the many information points. Once you arrive at the bus station, make sure you check the boards to find out exactly which lane the busses with Andorra as a destination are departing from. The boards can be subject to changes, so make sure you keep an eye on them. The buses tend to leave from lanes Number 0 to 12.
If you are travelling with Easyjet or Ryanair you will land at Terminal 2 in Barcelona airport. Terminal 2 is Barcelona´s airport´s older terminal. While there isn’t as much variety as terminal 1, there are a few places to eat and stop for a rest. At this terminal catching the bus can be slightly more complicated as there is no Bus Station or even bus lanes per say. The buses with Andorra as a destination leave next to the “Technical Block”. This block is located between section B and C of the airport. If you leave the terminal from sections A or B you will need to turn to the right and walk a few meters, past the flags and the Miro mural (a painting on the side of the terminal) until you arrive at an area with a series of bus stops, in fact there is not much else in this area. The buses will generally stop there for about 10 to 15 minutes before departure. If you have any trouble locating the bus area from which the buses departing to Andorra leave, don’t hesitate to ask at one of the information points within the terminal as the staff there tend to speak English and they will be able to help you.
Make sure you aren’t late, as the buses will not wait for you even if you have a reservation. Plan your itinerary accordingly, keep in mind that your flight may be delayed. Although you may end up with some time on your hands between landing and departing on the bus to Andorra, Barcelona airport has plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops. The buses tend to stop at Sants train Station, Barcelona´s main train station. If you take the DirectBus and you have not made a reservation, you will have to get off the bus here to buy your ticket in the office. This is very easy as the bus tends to stop right in front of the office (the office is green and called Eurolines). You will have to present your passport at the office to be able to purchase your ticket.
When crossing the border remember that you will need to have your passport handy, as the border police may enter the bus to check your passport. Make sure you keep it on yourself at all times or in your hand luggage.
The busses into Andorra arrive at the countries main bus station located in the capital city of Andorra la Vella next to Mcdonald´s. Here you can organise a taxi to your destination or, as in the case with some of the companies, a bus may be organized to drop you off at any of the parishes, please bear in mind that this would include an extra fee.
